What is mixed dementia?

Mixed dementia refers to a combination of Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia. Around 10% of those diagnosed with dementia have the ‘mixed’ variety. Alzheimer’s is a dementia disease in which proteins form structures in the brain, leading to the death of nerve cells. Vascular dementia, meanwhile, refers to any dementia caused by blood loss to the brain – such as that from a stroke.

There is currently no cure, but those with mixed dementia can be supported in their daily life at facilities like Highpoint Care – which provides care for both Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia.
